Report: WRUST Are The Only Known All-Black Extreme/Death Metal Band In Africa

June 19, 2004

Tomeletso Sereetsi of AllAfrica.com reports that Botswana's WRUST (web site) are the only known all-black extreme/death metal band in Africa and the world. The act is a rare find in a white-dominated genre that has a cult following in Europe and United States of America. Twilight-X, a leading South African rock music website, has used superlatives like "World class metal at its best", "Very powerful death metal" and "An awesome performance by an awesome band. They are still the best band in the continent", when reviewing their performances as a supporting act for Denmark's stars, KONKHRA in Durban and Johannesburg early in the year.

A regular WRUST song carries dark themes of anger, politics, death, pain, witchcraft, violence, hard times and various other human tragedies expressed with raw honesty and a lack of what moralists and censors may term social decorum. To sample their programme line up, one is confronted with rockers such as "Kill or be Killed", "The Killing God", "Breeding the Undead", "Mortal Decay" and "Cleansing Ritual".

"We are not Satanists. This is just music that we love and use to express ourselves. We have been listening to this kind of music ever since our childhood and decided to form a band," says the group front man and founder, Stux of the music that has been seen in various quarters around the world as the devil's music.

"We have been inspired by classic rock and extreme bands. Our songwriting comes out of ordinary everyday events," he explains. Read more.
